Without Napheesa Collier for the second straight game with a back injury, Smith had to step up and in the first half she did. Her Lynx teammates found her cutting to the basket for most of her scores. The Mystics defense lost sight of Smith on these cuts, keeping their attention glued to Lynx guards Kayla McBride and Courtney Williams. Smith hit 60% of her shots in the first half, but that changed in the second half where Smith was less efficient and her looks weren’t as easy. Shakira Austin was more keyed into Smith especially, contesting a lot of her jump shots.

Napheesa Collier (back) will miss a second straight game due to injury, leaving a sizable hole in the Lynx rotation. Kliundikova’s opportunities moving forward depend on the availability of Collier and Alanna Smith (6/8/3/0/2 with one three-pointer vs. Los Angeles), as evidenced by her only playing three minutes in Tuesday’s win over the Aces. However, Kliundikova’s play against the Sparks likely left a positive impression on Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve.

On a night when they were without leading scorer and MVP candidate Napheesa Collier, the Lynx started slowly against the Sparks. Eventually, the team with the WNBA’s best record would pull away, with Williams being a key contributor. The veteran guard shot 3-of-4 from the field during the first quarter and was 4-of-7 after halftime, with Minnesota outscoring Los Angeles by a 48-31 margin in the second half. Williams has scored 17 points or more in three straight games, her most productive run of the season thus far.

With Napheesa Collier (back) sidelined, the Lynx needed their remaining starters to step forward on Saturday. To say McBride answered the call would be an understatement. One week removed from shooting 0-of-7 from three in a win over Los Angeles, she was 5-of-7 in Saturday’s rematch. McBride was especially hot during the fourth quarter, scoring 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. She only played five minutes and 42 seconds in the period, turning what was a competitive game into a laugher that the Lynx won by 16.

Smith’s three-point play with 18.2 seconds remaining did not impact the outcome of Tuesday’s game, as Minnesota was comfortably ahead. However, it did ensure the veteran forward of her first double-double of the season. Smith’s 13 rebounds were the most she’s recorded in a Lynx uniform and the most in a game for her since July 22, 2023, when she set a career-high with 17 boards as a member of the Sky. Per ESPN’s standard scoring, this was Smith’s fifth game with at least 30 fantasy points in 11 appearances this season.
