Shakira Austin powered the Mystics during Tuesday night’s 68-64 win over the Lynx contributing 19 points (7-of-18 FGs, 5-of-6 FTs), eight rebounds, three assist, and two steals in 28 minutes of play.

Austin continues to go on a tear coming off her eastern conference player of the week honors. Austin made a bunch of difficult and acrobatic shots through multiple Lynx defenders in the first half. Austin was her most successful when she was guarded by less athletic and less lengthly post players in Jessica Shepard and Maria Kliundikova. The Lynx had trouble keeping up with Austin’s drives coming off closeouts. Austin read the defense well in the second half, drawing two and passing instead of trying to score through multiple Lynx defenders. Her final field goal, an offensive rebound putback in the fourth quarter, tied the game at 64 with 32 seconds remaining in regulation.

Sug Sutton, Jade Melbourne, Sonia Citron, Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin will start Tuesday’s game against the Lynx.

The Mystics are without Brittney Sykes, who will not play due to a lower right leg injury. Melbourne has been tabbed to fill the resulting void, which likely means that Sutton will spend more time playing off the ball. Washington’s other four starters are unchanged.

Regarding production and leadership, not having Sykes is a significant issue for the Mystics. Jade Melbourne, who played 18 minutes off the bench in Sunday’s overtime win over the Wings, should figure more prominently in the rotation, and there may also be additional minutes for rookie Lucy Olsen.

Sunday’s performance was Sutton’s best of the season, as she recorded highs in points and three-pointers. The Mystics’ guard did not miss a shot from the field against the Wings, scoring in double figures for just the fourth time this season. In Sutton’s previous three games, she totaled 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Her performance against the Wings was well-timed, as fellow starter and Mystics’ leading scorer Brittney Sykes (8/1/4) shot 1-of-8 from the field. Sutton’s showing on Sunday does not make her a must-add in fantasy leagues, but she’s worth tracking for now.

Shakira Austin accounted for 21 points (7-of-16 FGs, 7-of-8 FTs), seven rebounds, two assists, one steal and one blocked shot in Sunday’s overtime win over the Wings.

Mystics head coach Sydney Johnson’s decision to move Austin into the starting lineup has paid immediate dividends. Washington has gone 2-1 in the three games she’s started since the change. And in the last two, Austin has recorded totals of 49 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocked shots. Stefanie Dolson (one rebound and two assists), who began the season as the starting center, only played eight minutes off the bench against the Wings. Currently rostered in 61.3 percent of ESPN leagues, Austin should be considered a priority add in standard leagues.
Kiki Iriafen

Kiki Iriafen produced 19 points (7-of-12 FGs, 5-of-9 FTs), seven rebounds, six assists and five steals in Sunday’s overtime win over the Wings.

While fellow Mystics rookie Sonia Citron recorded season-highs in points and rebounds on Sunday, Iriafen did so in assists and steals. Having recorded no more than two assists in any of the previous 13 appearances, she tripled that number against the Wings. As for the steals, Iriafen entered Sunday with a total of five, which she matched in the overtime victory. Given the numbers before Sunday, the assists are a more realistic tally for Iriafen than the steals. That said, she’s been productive enough as a scorer and rebounder to merit being rostered in most fantasy leagues.

Sonia Citron finished Sunday’s overtime win over the Wings with 27 points (9-of-13 FGs, 5-of-7 FTs), 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals, one block and four three-pointers.

Three of the WNBA’s top rookies played in Sunday’s matchup between the Wings and Mystics, and all performed well. However, it was Citron who stole the show, recording new highs in points and rebounds. She was also responsible for the game’s final margin, as Citron’s three with 12.2 seconds remaining in overtime capped a 7-0 Mystics run and gave them the 91-88 victory. Citron is rostered in just over 90 percent of ESPN leagues, and that number is a bit low, given her consistency to begin her rookie season. Look for that percentage to increase, especially with the Mystics playing three games next week.

Sonia Citron recorded 17 points (7-of-14 FGs, 1-of-1 FTs), three rebounds, three assists, one steal, and two three-pointers in Monday night’s 92-91 loss to the Dream in 37 minutes of play.

Citron has scored in double-digits for every game she’s played as a pro so far. On Friday night she scored efficiently, not taking shots that don’t lineup with the percentages, meaning either shots from deep or in the paint. She scored in transition at the rim, drove to the basket in half court sets and hit two timely threes to keep the Mystics in the game. Citron has proven she can be trusted in high pressure minutes for Washington as she played in her most minutes of the season on Friday night.
Brittney Sykes

Brittney Sykes amassed 21 points (5-of-10 FGs, 10-of-11 FTs), five rebounds, eight assists, two steals, a block and one three-pointer in Friday night’s 92-91 loss to the Dream in 35 minutes of play.

Sykes stuffed the stat sheet for the Mystics, mixing up hunting her own shot making while facilitating at a high level. Her comfort finding Shakira Austin in advantageous spots on the floor kept the Mystics in the game when other facets of their offense were hard to come by. On Friday night Sykes took 11 free throws, and she continues to maintain her status as the player in the league averaging the most attempts and makes per game. The only free throw Sykes missed on Friday night was with 0.1 of a second left in regulation, a free throw that could have tied the game up and taken it to overtime.
Shakira Austin

Shakira Austin amassed 28 points (13-of-17 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs), 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks in Friday night’s 92-91 loss to the Dream in 32 minutes of play.

Austin was a matchup nightmare for all of the Dream’s front court players. She’s more athletic than both Brittney Griner and Brionna Jones, but then she’s also so much taller and longer than both Nia Coffey and Naz Hillmon. Brittney Sykes and Austin’s chemistry came alive on Friday night as the pair connected on six total field goals. Austin showed off her face-up game and mid-range jumper as she was able to use her long arms to over extend over smaller defenders. Austin’s 28 points are a new career high and her 10 rebounds make this performance her first double-double of the season.
